ISHS Acta Horticulturae 298: Hortifroid, V International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamental Plants; Importance of Cold in Ornamental Horticulture

EFFECT OF COLD STORAGE DURATION ON BUDBREAK, ROOT REGENERATION AND ON CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT OF "MME A. MEILLAND" ROSE PLANTS.

Authors:   M.A. MENOUD, J.C. MAUGET, J.S. FROSSARD
Abstract:
Field-grown roses, variety "Mme A. Meilland", were lifted in autumn and stored for 16 weeks at +1 °C. Plants were periodically removed from storage and tested for bud growth ability and root regeneration potential after plantation in a controlled environment room. The distribution of soluble carbohydrate and starch in different plant parts was also examined. After 1, 4 and 8 weeks in cold storage, the buds required 19 days for breaking at 20 °C, while the root regeneration potential was weak. Starch hydrolysis and accumulation of sucrose and hexoses occurred in the root system. After 12 and 16 weeks in cold storage, increased root regeneration coincided with the release of buds from dormancy: the buds broke after 12 days at 20 °C. Extended storage at 1 °C resulted in sucrose depletion and fructose and glucose accumulation in all parts of the plants.
