Abstract:
As early as 1972, Mayak and Halevy showed that endogenous levels of ABA increased in rose petals as the flower senesced.
However, little is known about the regulatory mechanisms which control ABA levels in relation to senescence.
In order to determine if the correlation between water status and ABA synthesis, often reported in leaves, also occurred in petals, isolated petals were subjected to a water stress over actigel; decrease in water potential and changes in ABA levels were studied over a 48 hour period.
Radioimmunoassay showed an increase of ABA and this capacity remained equal whatever the age of the petals.
Moreover this increase could be directly correlated to the decrease in water potential.
