OSMOTIC POTENTIAL AND CARBOHYDRATE CONTENTS IN THE COROLLA OF THE ROSE CV. MADELON

Abstract:
During flower bud opening on the plant the osmotic potential of the petals increased in the first week. When flowers were cut and placed in water, the osmotic potential did not increase during the first 4 days. Carbohydrate contents also increased during opening on the plant, suggesting a correlation with osmotic potential. Probably within the corolla a competition between the outer and the inner petals occurs. Since petal area and sugar concentration increase when the number of outer petals decreases, there appears to be a competition for sugars, probably influencing water uptake and expansion of the inner petals.
