EFFECT OF PRESERVATIVE SOLUTIONS ON SOME INDICATORS OF SENESCENCE IN CUT ROSE FLOWERS

Authors:   D. Durkin, Ph. Barthe, V. Vaillant, L. Arène
Abstract:
Many preparations for prolonging the vase-life of cut flowers are commercially available. While the compositions of these solutions differ in detail, they all contain essentially a sugar, a germicide, an acid and an ethylene synthesis inhibitor.

Having already defined the indicators of the syndrome of senescence (Barthe et al., 1991) we studied the effect of these solutions on their evolution. The increase in pH of cell sap, the evolution of complex molecule hydrolysis (evaluated in terms of the increase in osmolarity of cell sap) and the increase in ionised forms (measured by the increased conductivity of cell sap) are all considerably slowed in the presence of a preservative solution. This result demonstrates that these easily measured parameters are good indicators of senescence.
