ISHS Acta Horticulturae 298: Hortifroid, V International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamental Plants; Importance of Cold in Ornamental Horticulture

A STUDY OF LONGEVITY OF CUT CARNATIONS (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) GROWN IN YALOVA (ISTANBUL)

Authors:   F. Gürsel Çelikel, I. Karaçali
Abstract:
The effect of seasons and growing conditions on the quality and postharvest life of cut carnation flowers (cvs Astor and Salmon Sim) was examined by harvesting flowers at normal maturity (fully open) in spring or summer from the villages of Koruköy and Çiftlikköy in Yalova. There were considerable differences in chemical composition (sugar content), physical characteristics (diameter, weight) and respiration at 20°C of the different flowers. The relationship of these differences to the vase life of STS-treated flowers, evaluated under standard conditions after storage dry or wet at 0°C for one week, is discussed.
