ISHS Acta Horticulturae 297: II International Symposium on Kiwifruit

GENETIC VARIABILITY AMONG THE PROGENY OF ‘HAYWARD’ KIWIFRUIT

Authors:   P. Blanchet, J. Chartier
Keywords:   Vitamin C, flowering date, budbreak, soluble solids concentration, fruit weight
Abstract:
A breeding programme was started in 1980 in Montauban. About 300 eight to ten- year-old seedlings (progeny of open pollinated ‘Hayward’) have been observed. They were trained like a commercial orchard. The frequency distribution of seedlings by classes for each pomological characteristic is presented in comparison with ‘Hayward’. There is a wide range in the dates of ripening and a high variability in the other characteristics (bud break, Vitamin C, size, date of blossoming, type of ovary, etc.). This allows us to retain some individuals for further evaluation and as genitors for a larger-scale breeding programme.
