ISHS Acta Horticulturae 297: II International Symposium on Kiwifruit

A REVIEW OF DORMANT SEASON AND PRE-BLOSSOM SPRAYS ON KIWIFRUIT IN NEW ZEALAND

Author:   R.H. Blank
Keywords:   armoured scale, leafrollers, greedy scale, latania scale, pesticides
Abstract:
This review advocates the management of kiwifruit pests over the winter and spring rather than prophylatic calendar spraying. The dormant and pre-blossom sprays, which constitute one third of all pesticides used on kiwifruit, can be treated as a common spray targeted to control over-wintering armoured scale. These sprays can be omitted when over-wintering scale are low, or when an intensive main season spray programme is planned. The importance of scale inspection, selection of suitable scalicides and time of application are discussed.
