ISHS Acta Horticulturae 297: II International Symposium on Kiwifruit

THE INFLUENCE OF THE TIME OF ANTHESIS, SEED FACTOR(S), AND THE APPLICATION OF A GROWTH REGULATOR MIXTURE ON THE GROWTH OF KIWIFRUIT

Authors:   J.G. Cruz-Castillo, G.S. Lawes, D.J. Woolley
Keywords:   cytokinin, CPPU
Abstract:
The time of anthesis, and the interactions between natural and synthetic plant growth regulators were studied in relation to fruit growth and fruit size of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit. Fruit growth curves of fruit from early and late opening flowers indicated that pre-anthesis factors and early fruit growth were important in determining final fruit size. Tissue culture was used to study the interaction between seeds and growth regulators, and it was found that in the presence of 2,4-D + GA3, BAP and/or seeds increased fruit callus growth and reduced the inhibitory effect of ABA. In a field trial the fruit size response to CPPU was enhanced when applied in combination with GA3 + 2,4-D.
