ISHS Acta Horticulturae 297: II International Symposium on Kiwifruit

FIELD RESPONSES OF KIWIFRUIT TO CPPU (CYTOKININ) APPLICATION

Authors:   G.S. Lawes, D.J. Woolley, J.G. Cruz-Castillo
Keywords:   fruit size, soluble solids, fruit quality, storage
Abstract:
Application of CPPU to kiwifruit increased growth of the fruit. Treating fruit in early summer increased mean fruit size by 20–70 g, whether applied to individual fruit or the whole vine. CPPU application resulted in a higher proportion of the crop being in the larger size grades, and there was no loss of response as vine crop load increased. The response began soon after treatment, with a further growth stimulation from a repeat application in mid-summer. CPPU use was associated with a darkening of fruit colour, a small reduction in flesh firmness and increase in soluble solids, and some changes to fruit appearance.
