ISHS Acta Horticulturae 297: II International Symposium on Kiwifruit

POLLINATION POTENTIAL OF STAMINATE KIWIFRUIT PLANTS IN VINEYARDS AT THREE LOCATIONS IN CALIFORNIA

Authors:   M.L. Meyer, F.A. Bliss
Keywords:   flowers, male vines, vine age, ‘Hayward’, ‘Chico Male’
Abstract:
Pollination potential as determined by levels of pollen fertility was studied among the staminate kiwifruit genotypes grown in California. We have collected flowers from male vines in 16 vineyards in three areas representing a range of ages and cultural practices. Analysis based on differential stainability produced estimates of 81–99 % viable pollen. Significant differences were detected between and within vineyards and a collection date x vine interaction was found. The results imply that the vines sampled in this study would be suitable pollenizers for plantings where ‘Hayward’ is the fruiting cultivar.
