STUDIES ON FLOWER INDUCTION IN KIWIFRUIT

Authors:   A. Fabbri, M. Lisetti, C. Benelli
Keywords:   shade, floral behaviour, bud break
Abstract:
Adult ‘Hayward’ plants were completely covered at monthly intervals during the vegetative period, between June and October, with 70% shading nets, and uncovered after leaf fall. This treatment succeeded in preventing flower induction when applied in June and July, and reduced it to decreasing extents in the other months. From the measurements of flowering made in the spring periods of 1989 and 1990 it appears that flower induction is a process spanning from mid-August (summer) until leaf fall (autumn), and that it is particularly intense in the period from the end of September to mid October. The effects of the treatments on vegetative activity (bud break and shoot growth) in the following season were proportional to treatment time. The overall number of flowers per vine seems determined by the percentage of induced buds and by the number of flowers per flowering shoot, as well as by the amount of bud break.
