ISHS Acta Horticulturae 297: II International Symposium on Kiwifruit

KIWIFRUIT IN TAIWAN

Authors:   C. Nee, T. Tsay
Keywords:   winter chilling, hydrogen cyanamide, species, yield, shading
Abstract:
Taiwan, a subtropical island with about 50% mountainous area, has variable geographic and climatic conditions. These offer a specially good environment to study the gene pool and physiology of kiwifruit. There are at least four native species distributed in the mountains at an altitude from 100 to 2800 m. Actinidia callosa var. formosana is evergreen and sensitive to freezing temperature, but is much more nematode-tolerant than the other species.

For commercial production, the yield of kiwifruit has been found to increase as the altitude increases. This is related to the chilling requirement of the cultivars. In general, kiwifruit orchards at altitudes from 500–1500 m need shading in the winter and/or chemical treatment in the spring to increase yield and quality.
