ISHS Acta Horticulturae 297: II International Symposium on Kiwifruit

CURRENT SITUATION AND FUTURE PROSPECTS OF KIWIFRUIT GROWING IN GREECE

Abstract:
Greece, a mediterranean country, having favourable soil and climatic conditions has a long history of fruit growing. Climatic conditions vary from semitropical in the south to temperate in the north of the country. Due to this variation and also due to the mountainous nature of the country, fruit species are distributed in areas responding to their specific environmental requirements. For example, in the southern part of the country citrus and olive orchards dominate while in the northern part deciduous fruit species like peach, apple, cherry, pear etc. are commonly cultivated. Kiwifruit is cultivated in areas suitable for peach and olive and it is certainly an economically important crop among deciduous fruit species. New plantings will be very limited in the near future and it is expected that problems related to fruit trading (antagonism, prices, fruit quality) will soon appear as has happened with other fruits in the past.
