PRESERVATION OF GERMINABILITY AND ENHANCEMENT OF LONGEVITY IN PAPAYA SEEDS THROUGH CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE STORAGE

Author:   S.D. Doijode
Abstract:
Seeds of papaya cv Coorg Honey Dew (8.5% mc) were packed in laminated bags (paper-foil-polyethylene) by removing air or replacing it with nitrogen or carbon di-oxide. These bags were stored at 5°C, 15°C and ambient (16–35°C) temperatures for three years. The retention of germination was higher in seeds stored with nitrogen both at 5°C and 15°C after three years of storage.

Seed longevity was extended from 1 to 3 years by preserving seeds with nitrogen or carbon di-oxide at 5°C with slight decline in seedling vigour. Controlled atmosphere storage of seeds was effective in preserving high germinability in papaya.
