Abstract:
The cells in ‘soft-nose’ disordered mesocarp showed considerable cell separation and cell wall degeneration.
The location of the disorder, next to the endocarp at the tip of the fruit, had the lowest mesocarp calcium content of the whole fruit.
Fruit from the site at which ‘soft-nose’ was prevalent contained overall lower concentra-tions of calcium than fruit from a site without the disorder.
However, there was little difference in the calcium content of two cultivars grown at the site showing ‘soft-nose’ despite their markedly different susceptibility to the disorder.
