ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF BUSINESS SYSTEMS WITH A LOWER DEGREE OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

Authors:   M.N.A Ruijs, E.A. van Os
Abstract:
Closed business systems in which there is no leaching of fertilizers and pesticides into the subsoil, and in which the materials are recycled, offer options to reduce the polluting effects from glasshouses. These systems, however, require extra investments in durable means of production.

Several closed business systems were simulated for a business with year round chrysanthemum. Wide gutters (ebb/flow) and narrow gutters (nutrient film) have the best perspectives as closed business system. The levels of water and fertilizers use can be reduced, and also a reduction of crop protection products is possible if a change is made from fixed substrates (sand, etc.) to water-based substrates (ebb/flow, etc.).
