BULB GROWING ON SANDY SOILS IN THE NETHERLANDS WITHOUT CHEMICAL SOIL DISINFECTANTS (1) |

| Abstract:
The bulb flower growers in The Netherlands use dichloorpropeen (DD) as a soil disinfectant. A possible ban on the use of this disinfectant may have radical consequences for the Dutch bulb industry and the structure of the bulb farms. In this study an outlook is given of the economic consequences of a prohibition of DD. The calculations were carried out on the basis of two scenarios describing the expected consequences for the farms, the regional aspects and the national consequences. Farm size is expected to increase by 50%, while the number of bulb growing farms will decrease by 33%. In those regions where bulbs are grown on sandy soils severe capital and income losses are to be expected. The damage for the national economy is less, as in the future a part of the bulb crops from sandy regions can also be grown on heavier soils. | |
