REDUCTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION BY RECIRCULATION OF DRAINWATER IN SUBSTRATE CULTURES.

Author:   C.J.M. Vernooij
Abstract:
Production in greenhouses causes pollution of the environment by rinsing out fertilizer, by pesticide dispersion, by organic and an-organic waste, by smoke and even by light. Especially in the highly specialized and concentrated glasshouse area between the cities of The Hague and Rotterdam this leads to severe problems.

A closed production system in which the air, soil and water are not or less charged is the pursuid goal of the glasshouse industry in the Netherlands.

In cooperation with the Experimental Stations for Horticulture under Glass in Naaldwijk and Aalsmeer is searched for the best path to environmental friendly farming systems under the side condition of quality maintaining and economic feasibility.

Recirculation of drainwater is a way to reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides.
