ESTIMATION OF THE ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF LIMITATIONS ON NITROGEN FERTILIZING IN VEGETABLE PRODUCTION

Author:   R. Uhte
Abstract:
In areas with drinking water extraction the government of the Federal Repuplic of Germany tightened regulations to horticultural production in order to protect water resources. To comply with these restrictions managers have to modify horticultural production techniques. These modifications will have negativ effects on gross margins of individual crops in terms of higher growing expenses, lower yields, problems to achieve saleable qualities and higher risks of production. To minimize the economic effect on profit managers have to adjust their cropping programme by stubstituting inefficient crops. Nevertheless, for a model vegetable farm restrictions on fertilizer application result in a reduction of gross margin by 17%.
