CLOSED BUSINESS SYSTEMS FOR LESS POLLUTION FROM GREENHOUSES

Authors:   E.A. van Os, M.N.A. Ruijs, P.A. van Weel
Abstract:
Closed business systems in which there is no leaching of nutrients and crop protection products into the subsoil, and in which the materials are recycled, offer options to reduce the polluting effects from greenhouses. These systems, however, require extra investments in durable production inputs, which do not always pay from the economic viewpoint.

Crops presently grown in substrates (e.g. cucumber) have the best prospects for closed systems. Crops so far grown in soil have moderate (chrysanthemum) to poor (lettuce, radish) economic prospects. The levels of water and nutrients can be reduced in all crops, and as far as crop protection products are concerned, also if a change is made from solid substrates (rockwool, sand etc.) to liquid substrates.
