ISHS Acta Horticulturae 294: II Symposium on Horticultural Substrates and their Analysis, XXIII IHC

FRUIT QUALITY OF STRAWBERRIES GROWN ON SUBSTRATES

Authors:   P. Lieten, P. Dirinck
Abstract:
With the further expansion of the soilless- and substrateculture of strawberries, taste has been questioned and it is believed that quality of fruits is with this system less then for strawberries grown in the soil.

Fruits of the same ripeness were gathered from two varieties, Primella and Elsanta, grown on peat, rockwool, peat, soil and NFT. A taste panel preferred in general strawberries grown on soil and peat. Texture and especially firmness were less for strawberries grown on NFT compared to soil and the substrates.
