SEDGE PEAT MIXED WITH ROCKWOOL AND SPHAGNUM PEAT AS GROWTH MEDIUM FOR POT PLANTS

Author:   J.B. Nørgaard
Abstract:
These experiments were developed to examine the potential use of sedge peat mixed with rockwool and sphagnum peat as a potting medium for greenhouse production of flowering and foliage plants.

Three separate growth trials were undertaken with the species: Tagetes patula, Coleus blumei and Syngonium podophyllum. A strongly decomposed ( H7 - H8 on the von Post scale ) sedge peat was used.

The design of the trial was 2x2x2 factorial with 10 replications. All treatments included 20 % by volume waterabsorbent rockwool granulate, fine grade. As control a commercial fertilized sphagnum peat ("ASB") was used.

The main effects were: mixtures with sphagnum peat and slow-release fertilizer gave the highest dry weight yield in all the 3 species used. The control was in all trials in the best group and in a few cases was significantly better than the other treatments.
