ISHS Acta Horticulturae 293: IX International Symposium on Apricot Culture

SPREAD OF SHARKA IN APRICOT TREES

Authors:   S. García, M.M. Martín, L. Avinent, G. Llácer, A. Hermoso, J. Serra
Abstract:
The results reported here confirm previous observations in that Japanese plum trees cv. Red Beaut are the main source of infection of sharka virus for apricot trees grown in Murcia and Valencia. Removal of branches showing symptoms in partially diseased apricot trees is a method currently used by growers in this region, but did not prove efficient, in general, to inhibit progress of the disease. Generalisation of symptoms in the whole top usually occurs within two or three years, although in the Canino variety this may well occur within one year. This variety, the most extensively cultivated in Valencia, has been specially susceptible to sharka virus.
