ISHS Acta Horticulturae 293: IX International Symposium on Apricot Culture

PARTICULAR ASPECTS OF BROWN ROT AND POWDERY MILDEW EPIPHYTOTICS ON APRICOT.

Authors:   L. Corazza, M.T. Ialongo, A.M. Simeone
Abstract:
Brown rot is an important disease of apricot in Italy. The epiphytic presence of Monilia laxa on symptomless flowers and unripe fruits of several cultivars was evaluated.

Generally, a high percentage of flowers, at the beginning of flowering, showed M. laxa in active sporulation, mainly on stamens and stigmas. The conidia of the fungus were frequently observed at the insertion of the stalks on unripe undamaged fruits. The importance of these epiphytic fructifications is stressed as a source of inoculum for the vegetation of the year.

The susceptibility of eighty cultivars to early infection by Sphaerotheca pannosa was evaluated. Several cultivars of apricot can contribute to the maintenance of the inoculum of this pathogen, more serious on peach.
