ISHS Acta Horticulturae 293: IX International Symposium on Apricot Culture

EFFECT OF FROST ON BACTERIAL NECROSIS OF APRICOT BUDS

Authors:   J.-P. PRUNIER, O. BORDJIBA
Abstract:
In order to explain the development of bacterial necrosis on apricot buds we conducted experiments on separate branch sections, on which we individually inoculated buds before exposing these samples to different "climatic" conditions with alternating positive and negative temperatures.

The occurence of either frost exposure or high bacterial populations of Pseudomonas syringae pv syringae did not produce significant damage on buds, but both factors present together induced typical symptoms after 3 weeks. Frequency (1 or 2 shocks), intensity (-5°C or -10°C) and duration (9 to 120 hours) of frost had a direct incidence on the severity of the bud lesions.
