ISHS Acta Horticulturae 293: IX International Symposium on Apricot Culture

CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME NEW APRICOT HYBRIDS

Authors:   R. M. Plazinic, D. Ogašanovic, V.M. Papic
Abstract:
Apricot is a fruit crop of increasing importance in Yugoslavia. The production is based on a small range of cultivars (Hungarian Best, Early Large, Stark Early Orange, Kecskemeti Rosza, Nugget, etc.).

In view of this rather poor apricot varietal range in Yugoslavia, the work on selection and hybridization aimed at developing cultivars of differing ripening time, adapted to local conditions, was initiated at the Fruit Research Institute at Cacak in 1950.

In 1974 extensive hybridization was carried out. Hungarian best and Kecskemeti Rosza were crossed with 11 European and Central-Asian cultivars. Also, inbreeding was conducted in these two cultivars and in a further 5 Central-Asian cultivars. Some 4658 hybrid seedlings were obtained. On the basis of cropping, fruit quality and other positive characters, 23 hybrids were singled out in the preselection.

This paper presents an account of 5 promising hybrids which were thoroughly evaluated in comparative trials in 1987–1988. They derive from three crosses.
