Abstract:
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Before we are starting to elect a new Chairman of Working Group on Apricot Culture and Apricot Decline let me please to introduce you, specially young scientists with a very short survey about work of our Working Group from the beginning till now.
Early in October 1961, a meeting concerned with apricot growing was held in Perpignan, France.
On this occasion, a limited group of five research workers from different countries talked over the phenomena of the Apricot "Apoplexy". In consequence of the disagreement concerning this problem, all present decided to set up a working group in charge of promoting the mutual assistance in investigating this complex disease, In view of the international aspects of the problem concerned, it was also decided to contact the International Society for Horticultural Science and to propose to include a colloquium on Apricot growing in the program of the XVI th International Horticultural Congress (Apoplexy of Apricots and its control).
According to the mentioned S.A. Paunovic have sended the letter to Prof.
A. Lecrenier, Chairman of the International Society for Horticultural Science and Vice-Chairman of the XVI th International Horticultural Congress and to Prof.
H.B. Tukey, Chairman of the Fruit Science Commission.
After having received favourable replies as well from Prof.
A. Lecrenier (He was quite agree with our suggestions, but he wanted to hear opinion from Professor H.B. Tukey) as from Prof.
H.B. Tukey (He said "your idea are splendid". Apricot is very important culture and needs to be very careful and systematical study.
He named me as Temporary President and to organize the mentioned Colloquim during the XVI th International Horticulture Congress.
At that time when I have get a letter from Professor Tukey in my office were famous Professor Laurence H. MacDaniels, from Cornell University.
This letter I have read to him and during that I was a pleasant feeling, but in the same time a sence of duty much more expressed on my face.
This are recongnized by Professor MacDaniels who said "do not thinking about this, you are young, you will do it and such chance are not often, may by ones in life and you should know that the man who proposed you to be President, is one of the mostly famous scientist.
Professor H.B. Tukey mean for U.S.A. as Michurin for U.S.S.R." This comment gave to me a great energy to work for our International Working Group) a Temporary Committee on "Apoplexy" of Apricot, had been set
