Abstract:
Since 1960 a wide-scale Apricot improvement programme has been carried out in France in order to create a range of suitable varieties.
Over 9000 hybrids created by cross pollination were observed yearly in order to select the best ones.
On completion of this evaluation process, the first practical results have permitted the release of varieties for the Roussillon area, in the South of the French apricot growing region.
The two new cultivars in so far as is possible complement the good "Rouge du Roussillon" apricot variety.
The first "Mariem" ripens at the same period as "Canino" but seems far superior to "Canino", because it crops regularly and the fruits are firmer.
The second "Helena du Roussillon" ripens 10 days after "Rouge du Roussillon" and appears to be the latest ripening commercial variety under our conditions.
