| Abstract:
Germany is a Federal Republic and consists now of 16 individual states. Within a certain framework given by the central work government, the states are responsible for education. Horticultural education is, as other fields, characterised by the fact that it has a broad basis, from very practical to scientific training. Students who want to work after the elementary school (gardenary school) usually have an apprenticeship for 3 years at the end of which they sit for a final examination. After another 5 years, they can qualify themselves for a position, which allows them to train apprentices (Meister), which is done mostly in their own business. After finishing the middle school, a student has the opportunity to become a technician, after attending a special school for two years. For getting a bachelor's or master's degree one has to finish the gymnasium which takes usually 13 years. After a practical time of half a year one can get a bachelor's degree at a senior college or a master's degree at the university level (there are 3 such universities in Germany). This takes about 3 and 5 years, respectively. For getting a Ph.D. degree at a university, another 3–4 years are necessary. This is of course also the basis for a career in a university. | |
