CHANGES IN SOME PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF STRAWBERRY (FRAGARIA X ANANASSA DUCHESNE) CV. OSTARA GROWN UNDER DIFFERENT SHADING LEVELS

Authors:   A.B. Osman, P.B. Dodd
Abstract:
Some studies on the physico-chemical characteristics associated with postharvest life and quality of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne) cv. Ostara were carried out. Flowering plants were shaded with netting of different levels of light penetration (79, 60, 51 and 41% which are denoted by S0, S1, S2 and S3, respectively). The results indicated that preharvest shading had no significant effect on fresh fruit weight, rate of moisture loss, fruit surface glossiness, fruit firmness, total soluble solids or titratable acidity. However, the adverse effect of storage time on the shelf-life and quality of fruits was highly significant. The performance of the different fruit types (primary, secondary and tertiary) was also found to be significantly different.
