STATUS OF THE TROPICAL FRUIT INDUSTRY IN THAILAND

Author:   S. Subhadrabandhu
Abstract:
Thailand produces large quantities of tropical fruits, vegetables and cut flowers. Among these horticultural commodities, fruits are very important and contribute a great share of the country's national income. Fruit production during the last five years (up to 1987) averaged 8.0 million t. Of this, about US$204 million worth or about 2% of the production were exported. There are many kinds of tropical fruits in Thailand. In the past the fruits were produced mainly for domestic consumption. With overproduction, processed fruits are becoming important, and high quality fruits have been promoted in foreign markets. With advances in production technology more fruits are exported every year.
