ASPARAGUS PRODUCTION IN THE TROPICS |

| Abstract:
There is an increasing demand for asparagus worldwide. This is mainly for fresh asparagus rather than for the frozen and canned product. It is only possible to produce asparagus in temperate climates during the late spring and early summer, and essentially this means that there is a period of about 6 months when fresh asparagus is not available from temperate climates. This provides an opportunity for producers in tropical environments to supply the product, even though the general quality is inferior. It must be emphasised that production in the tropics may be carried out in the humid tropics, in an arid environment, or at high altitude, and that each environment presents different production problems, and requires different production strategies. | |
