CROSSABILITY RELATIONSHIP OF SOLANUM MELONGENA L. WITH ITS NEAREST WILD RELATIVES

Authors:   S. Hasan, R. N. Lester
Abstract:
Crossability studies involving four groups of wild, weedy and cultivated (primitive and advanced cultivars) Solanum melongena L. complex and four groups of its natural wild relative, Solanum incanum L. aggregate, were made in order to investigate the possibility of gene transfer from wild into cultivated species through hybridization for improvement of the commercial cultivar. The results revealed that S. melongena var. insanum Prain and S. melongena var. cummingii Dun, are highly crossable with primitive and advanced cultivar of S. melongena L. S. incanum sensu stricto and S. lichtensteinii Willd. groups which are interfertile between themselves showed moderate crossability relationship with cultivated S. melongena. S. campylacanthum Dun. and S. panduriforme E. Meyer groups which are also interfertile between themselves are sexually distinct from S. melongena complex and S. incanum sensu stricto and S. lichtensteinii groups.
