CALCIUM OXALATE CRYSTALS IN VEGETATIVE AND REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS OF THE GRAPEVINE |

| Abstract:
The distribution and anatomical features of calcium oxalate crystals were studied in various organs of Vitis vinifera, cv. “Sangiovese”, and of two rootstocks, with light and scanning electron microscopy. The presence of crystals within the plant varies considerably with the phenological stage and with the tissue, but the differences among the examined genotypes are few; usually the different types of crystalliferous cells have a quite defined location, even when in the same organ two or three types of such cells are present. Idioblasts are the first cells with crystals to be formed in the rapidly growing organs; they contain raphide bunches and remain numerous in the organs and organ parts which will be abscised by the plant. The other crystalline forms, i.e. druses and prismatic crystals, usually appear towards the end of the spring, and are the most abundant in the organs that the plant will not abscise. | |
