GIBBERELLINS IN THE DEVELOPING FLOWER AND FRUIT OF DURIO ZIBETHINUS MURR

Authors:   A. Mamat, A. Abd. Wahab
Abstract:
Endogenous gibberellins in the developing flowers and fruits of Durio zibethinus were studied. Gibberellin activity was detected during the development of flowers and fruits of D. zibethinus, and the activity was highest during seed formation 3 weeks after anthesis. Active gibberellins in the seeds of D. zibethinus at week 3 after anthesis were identified as gibberellin A4 by gas-chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The application of GA paste which also contains GA4, to the pedicel of D. zibethinus fruits at week 6 after anthesis prevented fruit drop, enhanced fruit development, increased fruit size and weight by 20–30 percent.
