ISHS Acta Horticulturae 291: III International Mango Symposium

A DEVELOPMENTAL REFERENCE STAGE FOR FLOWER INDUCTION RESPONSE TO POTASSIUM NITRATE IN MANGO

Authors:   C.A. Fierro, M. Ulloa
Abstract:
Potassium nitrate effect on flower induction is difficult to separate from variation among apparently uniform trees. To reduce the variation in response, applications of potassium nitrate were started 3 months before the regular blooming period on five year old trees of cv. 'Keith', using growth flush stage as a developmental reference. Significant increase in percentage of flowering in early with respect to mid and late flush applications was observed in trees that were at the indicated growth flush at the moment of application but not in a set of trees that were sequentially treated as they reached the established stage. Trees that were unproductive the previous season responded significantly better to applications than productives. The pattern of foliar nitrogen content after application in nonproductive trees was delayed by one week and had consistently lower nitrogen than productive trees.
