ISHS Acta Horticulturae 291: III International Mango Symposium

TECHNICAL NEEDS AND STRATEGIES OF THE MANGO INDUSTRY

Author:   J.L. Hunter
Abstract:
Growth in the mango industry has been supported by an increase in the technical and statistical database. It is of crucial importance that such information be available and applicable.

Industry strategy based on grade standards, research, grower education, promotion, products, marketing and quality control requires continuous monitoring to ensure parameters remain relevant, and protocol procedures are correct. Statistical predictions of significantly increased production dictate the need for market expansion and the creation of new products and new demand.

The assessment of technical needs is an integral component in the design of industry strategies. Thus, the relationship between industry and farmers, and scientists and advisers, must be based on two-way communication and education: the future of the mango industry depends upon it.

The Mango Sub-Committee of Queensland's C.O.D. is well placed to design and lead industry strategy by using all the available information and by communication and consultation with growers, advisers and the bureaucratic processes.

It is the strategy of industry to plan for the short and long term in each and every facet of mango production, and for each arm of industry: domestic fresh fruit, export and process.
