Abstract:
Preliminary surveys on mango quality at a major southern market were carried out during both the 1987 and 1988 production seasons on fruit consigned from the Dry Tropics region in north Queensland.
The surveys indicated a number of post-harvest faults in fruit quality and presentation.
Major problems highlighted in the survey included sapburn, stemend cavity, underpacking, skin blemish, maturity, and size of weight dimension description.
As a result of the findings of the survey, the Queensland Department of Primary Industry (Q.D.P.I) implemented an extension programme to minimise the occurrence of these faults.
This paper outlines the problems involved, the extension techniques used to attempt to overcome the problems and makes comments for further research and extension work required in the specific fields.
