ISHS Acta Horticulturae 291: III International Mango Symposium

EFFECTS OF ETHEPHON ON MANGO FLOWERING

Authors:   G.G. Sauco, D.G. Fernandez, R.T. Lopez
Abstract:
Spraying mango cvs. Haden, Zill, and Sensation with ethephon (doses up to 800 ppm) caused raceme wilting, depending on dosage, application date, stage of receme development, and cultivar. Effective treatments produced results in 2–5 weeks, followed by new growth between 6 and 21 weeks after spraying. Whether this second flush was floral or non-floral, depended on the cultivar and on treatment application date. Racemes in early stage of development were not affected. The achievement of a second flowering is particularly desirable when dealing with subtropical areas where first flowering usually coincides with cool weather.
