Abstract:
Overseas markets for fresh mango fruit are being sought but a major impediment to developing these is the mango seed weevil.
While this insect's presence in fruit is inconsequential to domestic markets it has significant quarantine importance.
Mango industry expansion has occurred in areas removed from established seed weevil areas.
New orchards are free of mango seed weevil.
Recognition by exporting and importing authorities of farm freedom status would be advantageous to the Industry.
A sampling procedure for mango seed weevil is discussed.
Surveys of mango seed weevil in mangoes from trees in high risk areas outside and within orchards have revealed substantial infestation (> 80%) in the former and lower (< 15%) in the latter.
A strategy to limit the spread of mango seed weevil from infested to uninfested, 'new' orchards is elucidated.
Management strategies include cultural and insecticidal control.
