Abstract:
Cultar, a gibberellin-biosynthesis-inhibitor, has been shown to induce flowering in a number of commercially important mango cultivars.
The product is being developed in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Pakistan and Australia for mango cropping manipulation.
The cropping manipulations possible with Cultar ranged from off-season or early season harvests to simply increased yields.
The extent to which mango cropping can be manipulated varied with local climate, cultivars, occurrence of pests and diseases.
There is usually a yield increase associated with Cultar treatments.
It is important that adequate nutrients, irrigation and generally good tree maintenance be provided to maintain these high yields.
Cultar is a useful tool for timing mango production to exploit better prices.
With the use of Cultar, mango production can be spaced out making the fruit available over a longer season and hence enlarging the local market base.
More flexible production cycles will also enhance the export potential of mango.
