Abstract:
Work on mango breeding was started at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Hessaraghatta, Bangalore in the year 1970, with an objective of developing superior varieties for different purposes like regular and precocious bearing, attractive skin colour, superior pulp quality and freedom from spongy tissue.
One hundred and fifty varieties were introduced from different mango growing regions.
A number of crosses were made involving superior genotypes.
Nearly 1 000 Fl hybrids were found to be promising; namely I.I.H.R.-10 (Banganapalli x Alphonso), I.I.H.R. -13 (Alphonso x Banganapalli) and I.I.H.R. - 17–4 (Alphonso x Janardhan Pasand). Hybrid I.I.H.R. -10 is a dwarf plant type, with superior fruit quality and suitable for high density planting.
I.I.H.R. -13 semi-vigorous type fruits similar to Alphonso and free from spongy tissue suggested its suitability for export and I.I.H.R. -17–4 has very attractive skin colour together with good fruit quality suitable for export.
