Abstract:
Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I'm Bill Haines.
Welcome to the 3rd International Symposium on mangos.
I'm happy to be here with you today in Australia's Northern Territory.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsor International Society For Horticultural Science, and the organisers Northern Territories Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries, CSIRO Division of Horticulture, for inviting me to join you at this symposium and to speak to you today about "The World Mango Situation From a Market Perspective".
I have a unique perspective on the world mango market generated primarily from my international consulting work, and I'm anxious to share with you today a global market view of the international mango industry and more importantly, how it might relate to you in your research work, at whatever stage of the industry, from production to post harvest handling.
For without your efforts and specifically your continued research work this industry cannot fully mature to its enormous potential.
I come before you today first as a private businessman, an international consultant specialising in the tropical fruit industry specifically mangos - secondly, as a representative of four organisations: The Fresh Produce Council, a promotional produce organisation in the United States of which I am currently president; and as a member of the North American Mango Industry Association; and the United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association and the Produce Marketing Association.
As the founder of William David & Associates, an international produce industry consulting firm based in the U.S. I have spent the last 15 months travelling the world, through 16 countries on four continents, meeting with private exporters, industry association groups, as well as government officials.
I can tell you unequivocally that there are big things going on worldwide in the mango industry.
The market opportunities for these countries committed to developing sound mango export industries is exceptional.
