ISHS Acta Horticulturae 291: III International Mango Symposium

FOREWORD

Author:   J.V. POSSINGHAM
Abstract:
This volume of Acta Horticulturae contains the scientific papers of the 3rd International Mango Symposium. This Symposium, organised under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science, was held from September 24 to 29, 1989 in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. About 180 delegates attended from 24 countries, which is a measure of the growing popularity of this 'King of Tropical Fruits' in the international scene.

The organisation and hosting of a truly international Symposium requires the dedicated involvement of many people and as the Chairman of the Organising Committee, I would like to acknowledge the helpful participation of various members of the Organising Committee from Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Particular recognition should go to Mr Ian Baker for the overall organisation of this Symposium and to Dr E Chacko who conceived the idea of a Symposium and who assisted in the overall organisation and supervised editing.

It is also appropriate to acknowledge the co-operation and involvement of several staff members of CSIRO, NT Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries, and local horticultural growers for the various tours organised in conjunction with the Symposium.

The Organising Committee wishes to thank all the members and the delegates from various countries for making the event a great success and providing an opportunity to discuss research and increased co-operation in future research. All the papers presented orally at this symposium were edited by a committee consisting of Dr Elias Chacko, Dr T K Lim and Dr Vinod Kulkarni.

The organisers wish to thank the numerous organisations, listed separately, for providing financial contributions which enabled attendance of several overseas delegates and the conduct of the Symposium. The organisers also express their appreciation to the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) for undertaking the printing and distribution of the Symposium proceedings as a special issue of the Acta Horticulturae.

DR. J.V. POSSINGHAM
Chairman of Organising Committee
