Abstract:
The genus Ribes consists of about 150 species of currant and gooseberry, mainly distributed in northern temperate regions of Europe and North America, although species have been reported from Asia, the Andes and northwest Africa (Fig. 1). Several species have acquired considerable popularity in certain regions as edible fruits and ornamental shrubs.
Of the edible types, the main commercially-grown species are the blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.), the redcurrant (R. rubrum L., R. sativum Syme [= R. vulgare Jancz.] and R. petraeum Wulf.) and the gooseberry (R. grossularia L.).
