THE INFLUENCE OF GREEN MANURE FORECROPS AND OF SPRAY IRRIGATION ON THE YIELD OF LATE CABBAGE

Author:   Z. Borna
Abstract:
The first experiment carried out in the years 1952–1957 concerned the influence of green manure forecrops, sown in early spring and ploughed under in June, on the yield of late cabbage, which was grown the same year. The experiment carried out on a sandy loam without irrigation proved the negative influence of this forecrop on the yield of cabbage. This decrease of yield was caused by a water deficit in soil due growing of soil improving crops. Hence in the years of low rainfall during spring and summer the yield decrease of cabbage, caused by growing soil improving forecrops, was significant. Ten years later, from 1967–1969 the next experiment was carried out concerning the influence of green manure forecrops and of spray irrigation on the yield of late cabbage.

The purpose of this investigation was to test the response of spray irrigated and non spray-irrigated cabbage to the growing of spray irrigated and non-spray irrigated green manure forecrops. Phacelia and a mixture of vetch with field pea were used as soil improving crops.

On the basis of the three years experiment results the following conclusions have been drawn:

  1. Green manure forecrops, which were not spray irrigated, lowered the yield of non-spray irrigated cabbage.
