USE OF IMAGE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES, FOR DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES IN "IN VITRO" REGENERATED PLANTS OF LAVATERA OBLONGIFOLIA

Authors:   J.M. Iriondo, C. Pérez
Abstract:
Image analysis techniques were used to help determine the developmental patterns found in in vitro regenerated plantlets of Lavatera oblongifolia, an endemic shrub from SE Spain with a great ornamental value.

The features measured in leaves by image analysis were limb length, area, perimeter, form factor and apical angle, petiole length and leaf hairiness. In the study, leaves from adult plants in their natural habitat, from plants from cuttings and from in vitro regenerated plants were analyzed. Young vitroplants just acclimatized to greenhouse conditions showed similarities to young plantlets obtained from cuttings and both of them followed a parallel pattern of development. Although initially significant differences were found (high petiole length / limb length ratio, low hairiness, high form factor) when compared to adult plants in their natural habitat, these differences greatly diminished as development progressed.
