SOMACLONAL VARIATION IN SOME AGRONOMIC CHARACTER IN WHEAT

Author:   Akbar S. Mohmand
Abstract:
Somaclones regenerated from three wheat cultivars; Glennson, Pavon and PAK-16171 were evaluated for various agronomic and morphological characters in the greenhouse. Calli were initiated from germinating seeds on Linsmaier and Skoog's (LS) basal medium plus 2 mg/1 2,4-D, 2% sucrose and 1% agar. The E-calli were regenerated in to whole plants after 8 months in culture. Comparison for agronomic and morphological characters between the parents and somaclones and among the somaclones revealed significant differences were in the flag, leas area which was 3 to 4 times greater in some somaclones. Somaclones also produced longer spikes resulting in increased grain number per spike.
