VARIATION IN PLANTS REGENERATED FROM POTATO SOMATIC CELLS

Abstract:
A wide range of somaclonal variation was found among potato plants regenerated from protoplasts, stem and tuber tissue callus cultures.

Many of primary regenerants (SC1) differed from the donor 'Bintje' plants, and each other as well. Differences in general appearance of SC1 plants, their height, leaf size and shape, and also in number, size, shape and skin colour of tubers were evident.

Tubers developed on these plants had mostly white skin colour, but some of them appeared to have green or violet. This variability in skin colour has not been transmitted in vegetative propagated plants which produced only white skin tubers.

The certain number of vegetative propagated plants SC2, and also SC3, preserved the modified leaf size and shape established in the SC1 plants.

Somaclonal variability in SC1, SC2 and SC3 plants was evaluated on the base of changes in leaf sizes and shapes, and tuber number and morphology.

Somaclonal variability in SC1 plants have been confirmed at the chromosome level, mostly of them were aneuploid (60%), and 16 randomly choosen regenerants showed mutual differences in solubile protein patterns.
