ISHS Acta Horticulturae 289: International Symposium on Plant Biotechnology and its Contribution to Plant Development, Multiplication and Improvement

CONSERVATION IN VITRO

Author:   B. W.V. Grout
Keywords:   cryopreservation, post-thaw injury, vitrification
Abstract:
Secure and reliable conservation of plant materials, with a high level of genetic stability, is a strategy central to successful plant improvement. In those situations where conventional seed storage is inappropriate effective conservation in the medium term can be simply achieved by manipulation of aspects of the in vitro environment of the cultured material. Where maximum genetic stability is needed then cryogenic storage is required. Whilst still relatively new and technically complex the applications of this latter technology are widening and it is becoming accepted as a key element in germplasm maintenance and the contribution of biotechnology to plant improvement.
